MOLINE KRAMER - PROFILE

More than painting a likeness of a particular person, I wanted to paint a portrait of an emotion; a universal identifying feeling, (emotions are inherited not learned.) Although it is generally accepted that there are seven, within each emotion the variations and combinations are endless; startled shock (surprise plus fear) as versus startled joy, (surprise plus happy). I choose actors as my models believing that they would be able to portray every emotion, but to my education they were "better", more authentic, at one or two particular ones. The more "authentic" emotion was who they were as people; it defined them and they then mimicked to a greater or lesser degree of success the other feelings/emotions. There were people filled with wonder and those stuffed with sadness and in all cases the 'defining' emotion leaked into the others. (As an interesting footnote, I found that the ultimate state of happiness, ecstasy, was almost impossible for everyone to project; they had to be there to show it.) Little did I know when I started this project just how fascinated I would be, and continue to be, by these human quirks and qualities; by trying to portray the very state, essence, definition of being human. My greatest compliment comes when the viewer mirrors the very emotion they are observing; thanks. -- Moline Kramer
